Three former university colleagues – two urban planners and an architect – joined forces to participate in a prestigious urban design competition for the development of a new urban quarter on the site of Münster’s former freight yard. The competition offered the opportunity to craft an innovative vision for a forward-looking urban neighborhood situated close to the city center and the main train station. Münster is renowned for its architectural quality and urban planning ambition. The historic Prinzipalmarkt and the modern Hafenviertel exemplify the city’s wide-ranging architectural identity. The competition site, an inner-city brownfield with direct access to the main train station, was identified as a potential urban hinge – a space to bridge the transition between Münster’s historic center and its surrounding neighborhoods while developing its own unique identity. The primary aim of the design was to enhance the former railway site into a vibrant and functional urban space for Münster’s current and future residents. Given the city’s strained housing market, the plan proposed urban building forms that provided a balanced mix of residential and commercial spaces. A key objective was to promote a diverse range of uses, creating a lively, safe, and active neighborhood throughout the day. The central idea of the proposal was the creation of a continuous green corridor, referred to as the „Gleispark“ (Track Park), connecting the new quarter with Münster’s southern neighborhoods. This green spine was designed to offer spaces for sports, recreation, and dining, while celebrating the site’s railway heritage to give the quarter a distinct identity and character. A sequence of urban landmarks, designed as high-rise buildings, was planned along the green corridor to emphasize the area’s urban significance. Flanking this green backbone, mixed-use residential neighborhoods with ground-floor commercial spaces were proposed, along with a compact town center featuring plazas and public spaces. The goal was to create an environment that embodies the diversity and vibrancy of urban living while catering to different demographic groups. The interdisciplinary collaboration between the three team members – combining strategic planning with architectural sensitivity – resulted in a proposal praised by the jury for its innovative integration of green spaces, mixed uses, and a strong sense of identity. Although the design did not win first place, it was commended for its forward-thinking approach and its emphasis on sustainability, social inclusivity, and thoughtful design. For the team, participating in the competition was a valuable step in their professional development and an opportunity to actively contribute to shaping future-oriented urban planning.
