Erweiterung Neue Nationalgalerie

The extension of the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin creates a harmonious connection with the existing sculpture garden, forming a cohesive architectural ensemble. The northern staircase has been subtly reduced in width, allowing for a seamless, ground-level transition between the old and new buildings, without visible interruptions. Visitors can either enter the new gallery space directly or via the reinterpreted „city loggia,“ a transitional space that blurs the line between interior and exterior. Designed as a respectful addition to Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s original composition, the new gallery stands as an independent „temple“ for 20th-century art. This structure, with its slender height, enhances the Kulturforum as a key cultural hub in Europe, making a vertical statement while remaining in the background. On three levels, covering approximately 7,000 square meters, contemporary artworks are exhibited in an open, free-flow layout, encouraging intuitive exploration. The central staircase not only serves as a vertical connector but also acts as a light shaft, extending through the entire building, and provides additional exhibition space. The building’s base level, which connects to the old gallery, houses exhibition spaces, a museum shop, and storage areas. Unique „showrooms“ allow visitors to witness art in handling, offering an interactive experience beyond static displays. The main entrance, accessed via the city loggia, opens into a spacious foyer with reception, cloakroom, and educational spaces. Offices and administrative rooms are located in the rear. The three upper floors are dedicated to permanent, temporary, and special exhibitions, with the top floor featuring a grand hall for events, media art, and additional gallery spaces. This uppermost level is naturally lit through skylights, while other floors rely on artificial lighting. The new gallery features load-bearing reinforced concrete exterior walls, with prestressed concrete slabs spanning 14.4 meters between supports. The structure is further stabilized by diagonal stair and elevator cores. The façade, punctuated by a grid of columns, is defined by openings at the entrance level, clad in black, creating a visual foundation for the building. Horizontal concrete bands delineate each floor from the outside. Inside, a contrast between dark exposed concrete and bright white display walls, paired with steel-glass elements, creates a striking yet neutral environment. The seamless, polished screed floors enhance the minimalist aesthetic, ensuring the focus remains on the art. This careful balance of materials and form complements the original architecture while providing a modern, functional space for contemporary art.
