Gesamtschule Ebsdorfergrund
The Comprehensive School Ebsdorfergrund is located in the Heskem district and blends harmoniously into its surroundings, characterized by low-rise, detached residential buildings. The topography of the site features a significant slope, which has been thoughtfully incorporated into the design. The aim is to create a central, connecting building that strengthens the campus character while integrating and preserving existing, valuable structures. The two-story new building respects the surrounding building heights and is embedded into the landscape due to the natural slope. A barrier-free access to the green roof is made possible by reusing the excavated soil. The roof serves not only as a recreational area but also as a retention area and is used educationally, for example, through a rooftop garden and a „green classroom.“ Inside the building, a light-filled atrium connects different areas. The cafeteria on the ground floor serves as a social hub, while the classrooms are organized in flexible clusters to meet modern educational requirements. The material choice for the new building is based on sustainability principles, with a preference for timber construction. This supports energy efficiency, creates a homely atmosphere, and facilitates the reuse of building materials following the „Cradle to Cradle“ principle. The building’s façade, made of wood and glass, harmonizes with the surroundings through its dynamic structure while providing natural ventilation. The green roof contributes to energy efficiency and houses a photovoltaic system. Additionally, accessibility is ensured through ramps, elevators, and wheelchair-accessible restrooms. Overall, the design combines ecological and economic sustainability by preserving and modernizing existing buildings instead of opting for complete new construction. The construction process is designed for a fast completion during ongoing school operations, supported by modular construction methods that allow for efficient use of resources and time.
