Between 2015 and 2019, a successful and enriching collaboration emerged between two architecture graduates and an experienced architect in Oberursel. Together, the team dedicated itself to the challenging task of renovating and modernizing social housing in Potsdam on behalf of a public client. The focus of these projects was the cost-effective renovation and modernization of severely deteriorated building stock. It was crucial to sustainably improve the quality of living without causing the displacement of residents. The projects were carried out as part of public funding programs, emphasizing adherence to budgets and functionality. The primary goal was to preserve the social character of the housing developments while providing residents with modern, affordable, and livable homes. The planning challenge lay not only in the economic implementation of the measures but also in adapting the building stock to contemporary standards. Key tasks included energy-efficient renovations, the restoration of load-bearing elements, and the modernization of layouts and installations. Close collaboration with authorities, funding agencies, and residents shaped the projects, requiring not only architectural expertise but also strong communication and organizational skills. For the two graduates, who had recently completed their studies, this period was of immense value. In particular, they gained practical experience in project phases 5 through 9, which had been lacking prior. They accompanied projects from execution planning through construction supervision to final handover. Along the way, they learned the nuances of practical construction implementation, coordination among various trades, and the importance of clear and precise construction management. The experienced architect served as a mentor, contributing his expertise to the projects, fostering a continuous learning curve and efficient workflows. Together, the team overcame obstacles, developed creative solutions, and established a solid foundation for future projects. This four-year collaboration was not only a professional milestone for the young graduates but also a significant contribution to urgently needed social infrastructure in Potsdam. The projects demonstrated that with a clear focus on efficiency, cost-awareness, and social responsibility, even challenging renovation tasks can be successfully completed. The time in Oberursel remains a formative and inspiring phase for all involved, blending personal growth, teamwork, and service to society in a harmonious and meaningful way.
