Haus der Musik
Develop a place where musical performances of various genres can take place simultaneously. Three halls of different character and size are to be created, all sharing a common infrastructure. The House of Music is designed as an accessible venue, fostering interaction and inclusivity. Positioned between streets and railway tracks, the movement around the ensemble creates a constantly shifting interplay and dynamic tension between the two offset building volumes. Located at the intersection of the Rhine River axis and the orthogonally running Hohenzollern Bridge, the hotel marks an accentuated endpoint to the Konrad-Adenauer-Ufer. The detached placement of the concert hall, independent of the heterogeneous surroundings, makes it appear highly autonomous, striking, and powerful within the urban landscape. The desire for a low-threshold music house, free from hierarchies, is realized by arranging the halls around a shared, forum-like foyer. To achieve maximum legibility of the halls in the cityscape, as well as a compact building volume, all artist spaces are housed in the base of the building. The structure is enclosed in a double row of white exposed concrete columns. The strict vertical façade structure gains dynamism through movement around the building. Layered, transparent yet not immediately comprehensible, simple and clearly structured, with high functionality and understated, delicate elegance, the concert hall integrates seamlessly into Cologne’s urban space, enriching it as a new place of encounter, cultural diversity, and a center of music for everyone.
