Following the sudden announcement of our commission for the project, we embarked on a research excursion to Berlin, where we explored various references and precedents for designing the cafeteria at Trade Republic’s new headquarters. The vision for the cafeteria was to create a multifunctional space that would cater to both employees and the public, aiming to make it not only an integral part of the office environment but also a social hub. The challenge was to balance the functionality of the space with aesthetic appeal, ensuring it became a hotspot while seamlessly integrating into the existing office design. A key goal of the project was to simplify functionality, creating a versatile and efficient environment for everyday use. However, this ambition faced significant constraints due to regulatory and compliance requirements. During the design process, we adopted the approach of pushing boundaries incrementally, exploring how far we could extend the design possibilities without breaching regulatory approval standards. Each stage involved careful negotiation between creative intent and the technical limitations imposed by local building codes. Unfortunately, as the project developed, technical shortcomings in the new building came to light. These issues, combined with Trade Republic’s decision to relocate their headquarters, ultimately led to the project’s discontinuation. Although the design never came to fruition, the process offered valuable insights into the delicate balance between innovative design and regulatory compliance, as well as the importance of adaptability in fast-paced projects like this one. This exploration of possibilities, and the lessons learned along the way, will undoubtedly inform future projects in which we seek to create spaces that both inspire and function at the highest level.
